So Much Racist Drivel.

Recently this post arrived on a thread at the message board I frequent. While some responded by saying "excellent post" and "love it", my response was "Wow. That wasn't racist at all"(Note a thick side order of sarcasm). I began questioning my affiliation with these people. And it's not just that the post was racist. It was cold and thoughtless. Anyone who has read anything about the experiences of those caught in the aftermath of Katrina will understand why this post made me livid.

No one on the message board has responded to my response. I suspect that they never will because they know that I'm right. But, just for fun, read the article and tell me what you think:

THINK ABOUT THIS FOR A MOMENT ...really think about this.

North Dakota News

This text is from a county emergency manager out in the western part of North Dakota state after the recent snow storm.

WEATHER BULLETIN

Up here in the Northern Plains we just recovered from a Historic event --- may I even say a "Weather Event" of "Biblical Proportions" --- with a historic blizzard of up to 44" inches of snow and winds to 90 MPH that broke trees in half, knocked down utility poles, stranded hundreds of motorists in lethal snow banks, closed ALL roads, isolated scores of communities and cut power to 10's of thousands.

FYI:

George Bush did not come....

FEMA did nothing....

No one howled for the government...

No one blamed the government

No one even uttered an expletive on TV...

Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton did not visit

Our Mayor's did not blame Bush or anyone else

Our Governor did not blame Bush or anyone else either

CNN, ABC, CBS, FOX, or NBC did not visit - or report on this category 5 snow storm

Nobody demanded $2,000 debit cards.....

No one asked for a FEMA Trailer House....

No one looted...

Nobody - I mean Nobody demanded the government do something

Nobody expected the government to do anything either

No Larry King, No Bill O'Rielly, No Oprah, No Chris Mathews and No Geraldo Rivera

No Shaun Penn, No Barbara Striesand, No Hollywood types to be found

And

Nope, we just melted the snow for water

Sent out caravans of SUV's to pluck people out of snow engulfed cars

The truck drivers pulled people out of snow banks and didn't ask for a penny

Local restaurants made food and the police and fire departments delivered it to the snow bound families

Families took in the stranded people - total strangers

We Fired up wood stoves

Broke out coal oil lanterns or Coleman lanterns

We put on an extra layers of clothes because up here it is "Work or Die"

We did not wait for some affirmative action government to get us out of a mess created by being immobilized by a welfare program that trades votes for 'sittin at home' checks.

Even though a Category "5" blizzard of this scale has never fallen this early...we know it can happen and how to deal with it ourselves.

"In my many travels, I have noticed that once one gets north of about 48 degrees North Latitude, 90% of most of the world's social problems evaporate."

It does seem that way, at least to me.. I hope this gets passed on..

Maybe,, SOME people will get the message,, The world Does not owe you a living....

the person clearly has no idea what new orleans is like, geographically, and what exactly this did to people's lives. if any of their snow storms ever evacuate 80% of their population for more than 6 months (and counting), then maybe they can talk. basically they're comparing apples to oranges and somehow amazed that its not the same thing. moreover they seem to think that towns that tend to have 10% or fewer minorities have less racial trouble. wow. amazing. when i lived in new orleans i had fewer troubles with snow chains on my tires.

I'm just not stupid enough to think it was because snow chains aren't actually trouble.

Thanks, Polly. I completely agree. Apples & oranges.

I never want to meet the arrogant asshole who sat his computer and typed this BS up. His beef could have just been about people who take advantage of the system, in which case he has plenty of reason to gripe. But to bring in a city of people who were torn from their homes and forced to watch their fellow man die in front of them and their children is so despicable I just want to vomit until I die.

I appreciate your comment.

well, sometimes it just shows priorities. Now, i'm not saying looting is bad, but when people are dying and starving and having to be euthenized...it amazes me that some were wringing their hands over the fact that there was looting going on. As bad as that is, its hardly the worst thing going on at that moment. sorta like worrying over a skint knee when your arm's cut off.

I agree 100% Tanda. If those folks in New Orleans were white then you would never see an article like that. 2006 and some folks still can't accept the fact that black people are humans too. Sad.

And of course Polly comes in and drops some major knowledge on us! One more reason why I hope that Polly runs for governor of our state one day. He has my vote for whatever office he seeks!

Hear, hear!!!

Let's get that ball rolling, Polly!

Here's my reply to that stupid story....

------------------------------------------------

Nice uplifting story, but mostly BS. Here's some facts for your
consideration:

According to this State of South Dakota web site, The Governor of South
Dakota asked for help, and FEMA was involved in the recovery effort:

http://www.state.sd.us/dps/Releases/12.02.05(2).htm

and 25 counties were declared FEDERAL disaster areas:

http://www.fema.gov/news/newsrelease.fema?id=21700

The South Dakota storm WAS covered by the national media. A google search
returns a ton of stories.

While there are valid criticisms of what happened in New Orleans, to
compare a snow storm, no matter how big or bad, to the devastation of
the hurricane and long term flooding (caused by failure of FEDERALLY
managed levees) and destruction of an entire city is totally unfair
and inappropriate. It's like comparing a sprained wrist to a compound
fracture of the leg. Katrina is shaping up to be the most costly natural
disaster in US history.

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2005/09/0902_050902_katrina_coverage.html

The duration, scale, and environs of these two disasters are very
different. South Dakota is a very rural state, while New Orleans is
a densely populated urban environment. The population of the entire
state of South Dakota is roughly 750,000. New Orleans metropolitan area
population is about 1.3 million.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_orleans

Finally, in general, more federal tax money flows into South Dakota than out.

In 2003 South Dakota ranked number 11 in federal spending per tax dollar
collected, and number 10 in federal spending per capita. Well, that must
be because they paid so much in taxes, right? No. South Dakota Ranks
33rd per capita among the states for shouldering the federal tax burden.

I'm sure South Dakotan's have much to be proud of and it is a beautiful
state, but it is NOT the picture of self-sufficiency painted below...
